Green smoothies are a great way to incorporate superfoods like spinach into your diet. Spinach is rich in antioxidants and minerals like Vitamin K, Vitamin C and Iron. I view drinking a green smoothie as a yummy alternative to surviving on spinach salads. Unfortunately, many of these smoothies call for ingredients like pineapples and mangos to mask the grassy taste of the greens. These fruits are great as a treat, but aren't ideal for someone trying to limit their sugar intake and lose weight. I looked everywhere for a green smoothie consisting mainly of super nutritious foods that I could stomach. I began playing around with recipes and came up with this light and refreshing concoction. The Green Goddess smoothie is perfect as an everyday staple snack/meal. I like to make it for breakfast so that I have plenty of long lasting energy to make it through my busy days. If you're a green smoothie first timer you may want to begin with a fruitier recipe, but I've had no complaints so far with anyone I've made this for. It's a man approved recipe too so if you are trying to sneak some nutrition into your boyfriend or husband's diet look no farther than the Green Goddess!
1 Banana (sliced and frozen)
1 Big handful of chopped spinach
1 Tablespoon coconut oil (if you aren’t a huge fan of CO, try ½ tablespoon)
1/3 cup milk (any type of milk will work—cows milk, almond, soy, etc)
1/3 Cup Orange Juice
1 Tablespoon flax seed meal or chia seeds (optional)
Add milk, orange juice and flax (or chia seeds) to the blender.
Next, add the frozen banana.
Add the spinach last. Blend until smooth and creamy. Feel free to add ice or some plain yogurt to change the texture of your smoothie!
