How to Make Your New Year's Resolutions Stick


A new year brings endless possibilities and the chance to wipe the slate clean and start fresh.  We love the idea of self improvement and re-inventing ourselves, yet only 8% of us actually achieve our New Year's goals (according to Forbes).  What an alarming statistic!  Not even 10% of us manage to change our habits and reach our goals. Changing a habit is no easy task, but it IS possible.  To help you out, here are 3 of the most popular New Year's Resolutions and tips to reach those goals. 

1) Lose Weight/Get Fit
Every January people seem extra motivated to lose the jiggle and get fit once and for all.  Unfortunately for most, this motivation quickly turns into frustration and the towel is thrown long before January comes to a close.  Here are our best tips for making this resolution stick:

-Make small, manageable changes. Sit down and write out 12 small health challenges-- one for each month of the year (ie. Eliminate soda from your diet, walk on the treadmill 20 minutes a day, etc). One of the reasons people give up on weight loss so quickly is because they make large, general health goals. If your diet consists of cheeseburgers and milkshakes and you attempt to go cold turkey paleo...you are likely to end up falling off the wagon. When you fall off the wagon you feel like a failure and give up. So try making small, specific goals.  Complete your challenge for January then add your February challenge to the mix. By the end of the year you will have made progress that is likely to be more permanent. 

-Find a support system. Enlist friends and family members to keep you accountable. Maybe they'll even join you on the road to health. If the loved ones in your life aren't so gung ho about your new lifestyle, try joining a running group or a weekly fitness class. You'll meet like-minded individuals that will help keep you motivated.

-Commit to paying yourself first (ie. Your savings account).  Decide what you are going to save each month and put that money away BEFORE paying bills. It's too easy to spend money when you can see it sitting in your checking account so remove the temptation. Arrange for a portion of your paycheck to be direct deposited into your savings account or simply transfer this money before you begin paying your monthly bills.
